Treadmill V-Belt Replacement: Sizes, Signs & How to Fit It

Is your treadmill motor running fine but the belt hesitates, slips, or stops the moment you step on it? Nine times out of ten, the culprit isn't the motor — it's a worn treadmill V-belt, the small drive belt that carries power from the motor to the roller. The good news: it's one of the cheapest and easiest treadmill parts to replace yourself, and a new one costs far less than a service call.

This guide explains what the V-belt does, how to tell when it needs replacing, how to find the right size, and how to fit a new one step by step.

What is a treadmill V-belt (and how it's different from the running belt)

Your treadmill actually has two belts, and people often confuse them:

  • The running belt (or walking belt) is the large belt on top — the surface you actually walk and run on.
  • The V-belt (also called the drive belt or motor belt) is a small, ribbed rubber belt hidden under the front motor cover. It loops between the motor pulley and the front roller pulley and transfers the motor's power to move the running belt.

When the V-belt wears out or stretches, the motor still spins, but the power doesn't reach the roller properly — so the running belt slips or stalls under your weight. Replacing this small ₹749 belt often fixes a treadmill that feels "dead" without touching the motor at all.

5 signs your treadmill V-belt needs replacing

  1. The belt slips or hesitates under your foot while the motor keeps running — the classic symptom.

A squealing or screeching sound from the front of the treadmill, especially on startup or when you step on.

  1. A burning rubber smell or fine black rubber dust collecting under the motor cover.
  2. Visible cracks, glazing (a shiny hardened surface), or fraying on the belt when you inspect it.
  3. The running belt runs fine with no weight on it but stalls when you walk — a tell-tale sign the drive belt can't hold the load anymore.

If you're seeing any of these, it's time for a new V-belt.

How to find the right V-belt size

Treadmill V-belts come in different lengths and rib profiles, so fitting the correct size matters. Here's how to identify yours:

  • Read the code printed on the old belt. Most V-belts have a size code stamped along the side (for example a poly-V belt might read something like 290J or 300J, where the number relates to the length and the letter to the rib section). Note it down exactly.
  • Measure the length if the print has worn off — carefully remove the belt and measure its inner circumference with a tape.
  • Match your treadmill model. Bionmart's treadmill V-belt is made to fit BIONFIT treadmills. If you own a BIONFIT machine, this is your part.

Not sure which size you need? Don't guess — send us a photo of your old belt (with the code visible) or your treadmill model number and we'll confirm the right fit before you order. This one check saves you a wrong-fit return.

How to replace a treadmill V-belt: step by step

You'll need: a screwdriver, about 20 minutes, and your replacement V-belt.

⚠️ Safety first: Unplug the treadmill from the wall and remove the safety key before you start. If your treadmill is still under warranty, contact us or your dealer first — opening the motor cover yourself may affect the warranty, and we can guide you.

  1. Power down completely. Unplug the machine and remove the safety key. If you've just used it, let the motor cool.
  2. Remove the motor cover. The front hood is usually held by a few screws underneath or on the sides. Undo them and lift the cover off to expose the motor, pulleys and V-belt.
  3. Photograph the setup. Before removing anything, take a quick photo so you know exactly how the belt sits between the motor pulley and the roller pulley.
  4. Release the tension. Most treadmills let you loosen the motor mounting bolts slightly to relieve belt tension. Loosen them just enough — you don't need to remove the motor.
  5. Remove the old belt. Roll it off the roller pulley first, then slip it off the motor pulley. Note the size code on it if you haven't already.
  6. Fit the new V-belt. Loop the new belt onto the roller pulley, then work it onto the motor pulley while turning the pulley by hand so it seats into the grooves.
  7. Set the tension. Retighten the motor bolts so the belt is firm but not over-tight. A correctly tensioned belt should flex about 1 cm when you press it midway between the pulleys — too loose and it slips, too tight and it wears the bearings.
  8. Check alignment. Make sure both pulleys line up so the belt runs straight, not at an angle.
  9. Replace the cover, plug back in, insert the safety key, and test at the lowest speed first, stepping on gently to confirm there's no slipping.

That's it — a job most people can do at home in under half an hour.

While you're in there: parts worth checking

Since the motor cover is already off, it's a good moment to inspect a few related parts and replace anything worn:

  • V-belt covers (left and right, ₹749 each) — if cracked or broken, they let dust into the motor.
  • Tension belt (₹599) — check for wear if your treadmill uses one.

Keeping these in good shape helps your new V-belt last longer.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a treadmill V-belt last? It depends on use, but a drive belt typically lasts a few years of regular home use. Heavy daily running, over-tensioning, or a misaligned pulley shortens its life. Replace it as soon as you notice slipping.

Can I replace the V-belt myself? Yes — it's one of the most DIY-friendly treadmill repairs. If your machine is under warranty, though, contact us first so you don't affect your cover.

Is the V-belt the same as the running belt? No. The V-belt is the small drive belt under the motor cover; the running belt is the large surface you walk on. This guide covers the V-belt.

Which V-belt fits my BIONFIT treadmill? Our treadmill V-belt is made for BIONFIT models. If you're unsure, send us your model number or a photo of the old belt's size code and we'll confirm.

My treadmill still slips after a new V-belt — what now? Check the belt tension and pulley alignment first. If it still slips, the running belt may need lubrication or the motor may need inspection — get in touch and we'll help you diagnose it.
